BEFORE THE JOB FAIR Review the list of participating employers. Research the companies that interest you. Check the company websites and learn who they are and what they do. Prepare a “1-minute commercial” about yourself as an introduction to the employer. Your “commercial” should explain: a) who you are, b) special skills and work experiences that set you apart from other applicants, c) things that interest you about this company. Practice your “commercial” out loud to feel comfortable. Be confident, enthusiastic, yet natural. Prepare your resume or have a list ready of your education, skills and employment history. Some employers may request resumes or some may ask for their job application to be filled out. Prepare questions to ask employers: what opportunities are available; what are the responsibilities; what skills are they looking for? PREPARING FOR THE JOB FAIR Bring your resume or list of skills and work experiences. Also, bring a pen and paper to take notes. Choose your outfit. Dress professionally and be well groomed. AT THE JOB FAIR Check in at the job seeker registration table. You will receive a layout of the job fair and where each employer table is located. Plan out which employers you want to meet. Be open and flexible; you may be surprised at what you find. Approach the employer, shake hands, smile and introduce yourself with your “1-minute commercial”. Some employers may interview you on the spot. Be prepared to answer questions. Some employers may ask you to fill out online job applications. There will be computer labs available for you to do that at the venue. Make notes about the companies you are interested in. Remember to ask for their business cards or company brochures. AFTER JOB FAIR Pat yourself on the back for putting yourself out there and going after jobs! Write thank-you letters or emails to those employers that interest you. Submit any applications that you took home to fill out. Call to make sure the company received your application materials if you do not hear from them in two weeks.
